2026 WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

9:00AM - Arrival/Check-In with Coffee and Refreshments

9:30 - 10:30AM - KEYNOTE ADDRESS - "To See, To Say, To Know: Writing Into Your Vision" with Jennifer Roberts (she/her), a novelist, fierce library advocate, occasional knitter, and aspiring mead maker who lives in Southern Oregon, where the mountains are tall, the lakes crystal clear, and the beer hoppy. Jennifer’s debut novel The Village Healer’s Book of Cures was published in November of 2023 by Lake Union. It was an Amazon Editors' "First Reads" Pick and was named an Editors' Choice by the Historical Novel Society. It features 17th-century recipes, witches, alchemy, and a wicked-smart crow. To learn more about Jennier and her work, visit her website: www.jenshermanroberts.com | Bluesky: @jshehermanroberts.bsky.social | Facebook @JenniferShermanRoberts

10:00AM - Haiga! Playing with Art and Poetry with Deb Murphy - Traditionally Haiga has combined calligraphy and haiku poetry. Contemporary creatives use many mediums including painting, photography, and graphic design. In this playshop we will create our own haigas using a variety of materials. Using our own poems or poetry of others, we will explore fusing poetry and visual imagery. Examples from traditional and contemporary Haiga artists will be shared. Paper and some art supplies will be available, but please bring your own if you have a special watercolor set, for example. From crayons to calligraphy… we will delve into the delights of Haiga!

10:00AM - The Writer as Architect: Crafting Visionary & Authentic Story Worlds with Shelly King - Worldbuilding is at the heart of every great story. Whether your setting is a medieval village, a modern coffee shop, or a time and place that doesn't exist (yet), the world your characters inhabit shapes their choices, their challenges, and the emotional truth of your narrative. In this fiction-based workshop, we’ll explore how worlds function as characters of their own, influencing mood, theme, conflict, and the reader’s experience. You’ll learn how to build immersive, believable environments that feel lived-in and meaningful, whether you’re reconstructing the past, imagining the future, or grounding the present.

11:30AM - 12:30PM - 1 HOUR LUNCH BREAK - Buffet in the Cafeteria

12:30PM - Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Ray Bradbury with Lisa Baldwin - This poetry-focused workshop will begin with discussions and group brainstorming on, first thinking like Prometheus (foresight, forethought), looking ahead 50+years, to 2075, and generating a list of today's new or developing cultural trends, fads, inventions that have the potential change the world/society, for good or bad. Secondly, we'll think like Epimetheus (hindsight, afterthought) and look back 50+ years to circa 1975 and discuss/brainstorm a list of problems, issues, and challenges we face today that began in the 1970s. Following group discussion, participants will spend 30 minutes writing in response to this prompt: Write a poem set in 2075. Imagine and use specific details to evoke a futuristic vibe and credible reality (like Ray Bradbury). Do not include the date anywhere in the poem. After writing, the workshop will conclude with time to share your newly drafted poems.

12:30PM - Drafting Copy to Sell Your Book with Scout Cox - So you've written your book, now what? This workshop is a comprehensive deep dive into the art of drafting marketing and back-of-book copy that sells books! Learn how to capture the attention of your future readers and captivate them. We will go over the finer points of how much to reveal about your plot and characters in your marketing copy, how to build tension, and other tools of the trade. Additionally, we will discuss the anatomy of your book's other front and back matter, including your author bio and acknowledgments. You will have the opportunity to draft copy for your book and take it through the editing process with your instructor, a professional copyeditor with nearly ten years of publishing experience.

2:00 - 2:15PM - 15 MINUTE BREAK

2:15PM - Put Your Character on the Couch with Joy Lotus - Complex and interesting characters are essential to any story. But how do you get to the true depths of characters? In this fun, exploratory writing class, you’ll slip into the role of therapist while your character becomes the patient. Using an adapted psychological intake form, you’ll dig into your character’s childhood traumas, bad habits, and weird hobbies to develop the marvelous, messy details that makes any character one readers fall in love with. It’s character therapy without the copay! This class is perfect for writers who want their characters to stop behaving like cardboard cutouts and start acting like the complicated bundle of contradictions we all are.

2:15PM - Creating Graphic Novels: Sprouting the Seeds with Ruth Halpern - In this 90 minute workshop, participants will play with words and images to begin exploring the backbone of their graphic novel. We will use storytelling, writing, drawing, and discussion to find many entry points to get our ideas flowing. The great thing about creating graphic novels is that you don’t have to be a great artist nor a great writer—you just have to have a compelling story to tell, and be willing to find the right framework for your graphic novel. No prior experience necessary! No story ideas? No problem! In this workshop, you’ll explore how creators dream up new ideas in the moment. Materials (pen and 3”x5” cards) will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own, as well.

3:45-4:00PM - Closing Remarks, Networking, and Surverys in the Gallery
